National Iguana Awareness Day: NIAD
Your starting point to great iguana care information

Horror Stories !!! (Warning - may be too graphic for kids and some adults)

Death of Wong — Although you will read many horror stories on this page, to me Wong is the worst. Why? Because in this case the owner (Adam Britton - now well known for his work with crocodiles in Australia) did everything right. Or at least he thought he was doing everything right when he left his iguana at a professional exotic exhibit when he had to go out of the country for six months. Unfortunately the establishment was not as "professional" as he thought it was and Wong ended up dead. Read the story at "Wong's Green Iguana Heaven" (you will leave the NIAD site).

Chronicles of Nicky — Nicky was adopted by a loving owner in an attempt to save him ... but he died 1 month after being adopted. His body was black from thermal burns, over half his toes were gone or deformed, he had mites and wounds from the mites and part of his tail had been broken off. Read the story of Nicky from the day of adoption to the day he died by the person that attempted to save him. Don't forget to look at the pictures! (you will leave the NIAD site).

Vito's Torture! — Vito does not have a website, but this was probably the worst kind of abuse. His owner actually tried to get help for an infection under Vito's eye. At that time he was given proper diet and care information. Half a year later the owner brought the iguana back to the same place. The iguana was in a 10-gallon tank, had no muscle and could not move. This picture shows what the iguana looked like at the time. It died only a few weeks later.

What MK Says About Pet Store Abuse

What can you do to prevent stuff like this? Don't make it easy to be part of the statistic. Don't give iguana's as pets to kids, don't buy iguanas from non-reputable sources, don't purchase iguana unless you realize they can be a 20 year commitment, and educate yourself before you buy! And please, if you can, consider adopting a rescued iguana instead of purchasing one through a pet store or other vendor.
