How Do I Travel With My Iguana?

Until recently I did a lot of traveling. The picture to the right represents all the supplies I brought with me when I stayed in hotels with Q. They include: Comet (my best friend), a disposable cleaning cloth, Q's carrier, a basking light, a towel, and a reliable extension cord. Unfortunately I have not found an easy way to bring his UVB bulb (broke 3 trying).

This is my bathroom, but let's pretend it is a hotel bathroom. Lots of things in here an iguana can climb when bored. There are towels on the towel rack and a shower curtain. There are also rugs on the floor which could be bad if he chose to relieve himself when he was not supposed to do (which he has done).

This picture shows the iguana safe basking spot. I have removed the towels and rugs, moved the shower curtain to the side, and wrapped the shower curtain out of Q's reach. I then wrapped the cord of his basking light three times around the shower curtain rod and threaded the extension cord through the towel rack. I then put his carrier under the basking light and put a towel over it for comfort. Make sure the light won't touch the cord, the iguana, the towel, or the shower curtain. Also make sure the light is secure so it won't fall. And to prevent unnecessary iguana drownings make sure there is no water in the tub and that the toilet seat is down. I hold no responsiblility if you burn the hotel down due to negligence :)

Other Tips

  • Provide the iguana with food and water during the day when they are basking
  • If interviewing for a job that requires travel indicate you can only travel if you can take your iguana with you (will be helpful later ... believe me!)
  • Always stay in a pet friendly hotel ... don't try to sneak your iguana in unless you are only staying one night.
  • Request no maid service and keep the "do not disturb" sign on your door.
  • Request a small dorm sized fridge be put in your room (most hotel's have them). Then you can either bring your iguana's food or purchase some at a local store.
  • Clean up really well after your iguana (this is a public hotel and kids stay in these rooms!)
  • Before you let your iguana roam around in the hotel room find places an iguana can hide. The best beds are the ones iguana's can't get under! Also watch entertainment centers, dressers, and fold out couches.
  • Remember the set-up on this page can be a fire hazard if not done correctly. I can't stress this enough! Make sure nothing will touch the light and that the light is stable and won't fall.
  • Be prepared - some hotels charge fees for pets!
